Epic Intimacy: The Cinema of Zhang Yimou and Gong Li

For over three decades, the filmmaking partnership between actress Gong Li and director Zhang Yimou has produced some of mainland China's most enduring imagery and arresting tales. One of the leading proponents of the Chinese Fifth Generation, Yimou cast Gong Li, a then unknown drama student in his directorial debut, Red Sorghum (1987), and so began their prolific artistic collaboration.
