ACMI Autumn Film Program

This Autumn, the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) has a little something for everyone. From Faith Connections the superb new film from renowned Indian director Pan Nalin, to Tiny: A Story About Living Small and the tiny house movement alongside new film restorations such as the Nicholas Ray classic, The Lusty Men.

Matthew Barney's Cremaster Cycle
24 Feb – 2 Mar
A decade after ACMI first premiered this astounding cinematic event (Feb 2004), rediscover the immersive visual treasures from acclaimed artist Matthew Barney in this special encore season of his epic five part Cremaster Cycle. See each film separately or come and experience the cycle in full when ACMI screen all five films in one epic seven hour marathon on Sunday 2 March.

Levitated Mass
1 – 9 Mar
Michael Heizer is one of America's leading proponents of land art.  With a huge boulder unearthed in a US quarry, documentarian Doug Pray (Hype, Scratch, Art & Copy) follows Heizer's 340-ton granite megalith to its new home at the LA County Museum of Art (LACMA). A stirring film about the power of ideas and community. More info

Vive la mode! Fashion on Film
5 – 12 Mar
From the traditions of fine tailoring to the latest runway shows in Paris, this season is presented as part of the Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival, with each title to screen a finalist's entry from the festival's short film competition.

Faith Connections
2 – 24 Apr
Indian filmmaker Pan Nalin (Samsara and Valley of Flowers) returns with a spectacular vision of humanity.  Every twelve years over 100 million followers of the Hindi faith congregate for the largest human gathering in the world. Held over 55 days, the Kumbh Mela takes place on the banks of the rivers Ganga, Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati. Pilgrims of all varieties come to bathe in the waters that wash away all sin and free individuals from the cycle of rebirth.

Tiny: A Story About Living Small
3 – 30 Apr
Tiny: A Story About Living Small, follows Christopher and his writer girlfriend, Merete as they construct their own tiny home. Along the way they meet other -tiny housers' and discover the motivations, design canny and passionate love that this community has for the lifestyle change that they have made. What these tiny homes lack in space they more than make up for in economic freedom, design innovation and environmental smarts. To celebrate this tiny film, ACMI is also offering tickets for the tiny price of $9 for ACMI members and $10 for non-members.

The Lusty Men
5, 6, 12 & 13 Apr
Robert Mitchum and Susan Hayward star in Nicholas Ray's classic tale of love, ambition and unbridled masculinity.  Mitchum's portrayal of an (emotionally) wounded cowboy is everything that a Hollywood leading man's dreams are made of.  While Hayward's Louise is a figure of beauty and resilience trying to keep her dreams alive. Shot in gorgeous black and white photography by legendary Hollywood cinematographer Lee Garmes and full of spectacular real-life rodeo footage, The Lusty Men is a wild ride of a film.  

Barry McKenzie Holds His Own

Presented as part of the autumn Australian Perspectives season, Barry McKenzie Holds His Own is a delightfully perverted Aussie gem packed full of unforgettable ocker one-liners and a healthy dose of Kung Fu.


2 Autumns, 3 Winters
18 Apr – 9 May
Up-and-coming French director, Sébastien Betbeder offers up a bright tale of life and love for a group of Parisian thirty-some-things.  Shot in a mixture of grainy 16mm and digital photography, the visual style of 2 Autumns. 3 Winters is vibrant and fun.  Featuring some of France's hottest acting talents, this charming, comedic feature premiered in the L'ACID sidebar at the 2013 Canes Film Festival.

Between Wars
26 Apr, 3, 10 May
Edward Trenbow (Corin Redgrave) is a young doctor bravely trying to convince a sceptical Australian population about the benefits of psychoanalysis. After witnessing the atrocities from the frontline of the First World War, Trenbow develops a practice in rural Australia as political unrest and another war looms.

Next Goal Wins
1 – 15 May
Filmmakers Mike Brett and Steve Jamison offer up an inspiring tale that charts the highs and lows of American Samoa's journey into the 2014 World Cup qualifying matches.  With World Cup fever about to unleash in homes, bars and streets across the globe, Next Goal Wins is a timely reminder that when sport is stripped of corporate logos and excess, it is humbling, inspirational and full of nail biting excitement. 

Samurai Cinema: Way of the Warrior
16 May – 6 Jun
Samurai films are among the most influential in cinema taking their place in the canon of cinema art. They include some of the most important films ever produced by some of the masters of the form.
 
Peterson
17, 24 & 31 May
Scripted by David Williamson, Tim Burstall's energetic study of inarticulate aspiration launched Jack Thompson as a major star. Part cheeky charm, part burgeoning awareness, Thompson is Petersen - an electrical tradesman who quits his trade and enrols at a university in the Arts Faculty to enhance his life.

La Paz
24, 25 & 31 May, 1 Jun
Premiering at the 2013 Berlin Film Festival, La Paz is a beautifully nuanced character study set in contemporary Argentina.
