NEW National Diabetes Qualification
The Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) has nationally accredited a new diabetes awareness, prevention and management course by health author Ian P McAllister. The "Certificate II in Understanding and Management of Diabetes" (10046NAT) is currently the ONLY nationally accredited course for diabetes in Australia. The flexibility of the self-paced program allows it to be delivered face-to-face, via distance learning or online.
The course aims to help raise awareness of diabetes and to help prevent or delay the onset of Type 2 diabetes in the first place and reduce complications due to diabetes, which is now recognised as a global epidemic. The course is ideal for anyone with diabetes looking to improve the long-term management of their condition.
The Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) is the unified system of national qualifications in schools and Vocational Education and Training (TAFEs and private training providers). This new diabetes course (AQF Level II Certificate) means that approved Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) can now deliver this course and issue a national recognised certificate upon completion. Federal and state government subsided funding may be available for eligible learners.
Target audiences for this new course include aged care, nursing, pharmacy, teaching and the fitness industry. Although, people with diabetes may face workplace restrictions due to diabetes in occupations such as commercial driving (bus, train, truck, taxi), people working at heights, off-shore, underground or with dangerous machinery, or where a member of the public may be placed at risk.
Diabetes can also have workplace implications for careers in the armed forces, fire, prison, police and ambulance services and for pilots/cabin crew.
Approximately 60% of Type 2 diabetes can be prevented in the first place.
