150 years ago when the nation was still forming its identity, Australia gained a small but vital Muslim population when camels were proposed as the best way to explore and service the outback. In 1866, the first large shipment of camels arrived in Port Augusta accompanied by 31 camel handlers. This was the beginning of a great adventure for these men and those that followed them. Their lives were full of hardship, unpredictability, segregation and alienation. Despite this some stayed and went on to marry and have families.
