Author Salvatore Sarate, also a native of the historically gritty realm of urban travails, is made of a similar toughness. From his childhood in the South Bronx at the tail end of the Depression, Sarate has spent decades converting hate to hope. He reveals the process of doing so in a version of his life story titled A Bronx Story.

A Bronx Story begins with a child born into poverty and hunger, facing neglect issues and school troubles. Finding respite in gang warfare, he gained the identity and friendship that had never been present within his home. Engaging in rumbles at a time when the New York public ardently wanted gang warfare out of the city, the young character and his gang, "The Rockets," attract the attention of the police. A brutal crime soon follows, and at the mere age of 16 years old, he is imprisoned for murder.

Speaking frankly of prison, Sarate does not shy away the occasional ugliness of life. His eventual freedom and success come as a result of personal integrity and strength, demonstrating that while it is not easy to rise above that which you are born into, it is certainly possible.

A poignant retelling of endurance among the worst of life's trials, including tragic family loss, A Bronx Story offers the brave message that out of heartache, anything can be changed for the better.

Salvatore Sarate wrote A Bronx Story in memory of a past friend. A retired salesman and former CEO of Safe Archives, Inc. (a company dedicated to the storage of documents), Sarate was a longtime New York resident until 2003. He now resides in North Carolina.
