On Sunday 17th August, 1,700 colourful characters in 550 vintage vehicles from six State and Territory Variety Bashes will converge in a momentous crossing of Sydney Harbour Bridge between 11.00am and 11.45am to mark 30 years since the first Variety Bash; before corralling at Moore Park to allow the public to view this unprecedented collection of novelty, vintage vehicles from 11.30am until 2.00pm.
The free Moore Park public event will be at the park on Driver Ave opposite Sydney Cricket Ground, with catering vans there for the general public to purchase food and refreshments.
The Variety Bash is Australia's largest charity motoring event having raised more than $200 million over the past 30 years. This year, the six Bashes will have collectively visited 100 remote and regional towns providing equipment and fulfilling grants for kids and schools en route, and injecting more than $3 million into the rural communities they visit Australia-wide.
Like the event, the vehicles are at least 30 years old and date back to 1928 and all have had a novelty makeover, making the Moore Park event the most novel and colourful collection of cars ever assembled. The wacky convoy includes Chevrolet Bel Air 1964 transformed into a -Wild Wild West' cart, a -Lifesaver' vintage Volvo, old school fire trucks, a 1960s Big Yellow School Bus, a 1929 Chevrolet converted into a Chitty Chitty Bang Bang replica, a 1938 Bedford turned into a Beverley Hillbillies jalopy, a restored 1928 model Ford utility, a pre-1974 ambulance transformed into a M*A*S*H vehicle, a Doctor Who 1969 Austin 1800 Ute and even a Ford Transit 1977 Mr Whippy van handing out soft serve.
