"Suzy Welch sparkles with brilliant ideas... If you're wondering what to do, which path to follow at the folk, whether to stay or leave- no matter what I may be- 10-10-10 will help you find your way."- Daniel Goleman, author of Emotional Intelligence.
14 years ago Suzy Welch was a busy working mother of four struggling to find the perfect work/life balance. When her attempt to combine a business trip with a family vacation ended in disaster, Suzy realised she had reached breaking point.
"I wasn't living my life. My life was living me. I realised I made many of my decisions as if I was watching from a moving car. More often, they didn't. And my life showed it. 'I have to end this craziness' I heard myself saying."
What happened next changed her life forever.
"An idea came into my mind. It was a lifeline and my lifesaver from that day forward. It was the beginning of a journey of discovery and reinvention. It was 10-10-10. I realised all I really had to do to reclaim my life was to start making decisions differently- proactively- by deliberately considering their consequences in the immediate present, near term and distant future. In ten months, in ten minutes and in ten years," Suzy says.
By asking herself these three simple yet profound questions Suzy was able to regain control of her life.
"I'm not suggesting I've got it all tied up in a bow," she admits, "but today, my life is renewed; my decisions deliberate, purposeful and confident."
Suzy decided to share her life-transforming idea when she received an overwhelming positive response after writing about 10-10-10 in her column for Oprah's O Magazine. Receiving thousands of heartfelt letters and emails from people lead her to release that 10-10-10 could help anyone make good decisions.
"It worked for men and women, young and old, near and far, in decisions large and small and in-between, at home and at work, and in love, friendship and parenting," Suzy says.
Recounting poignant stories from her own life and the lives of many other dedicated 10-10-10 users, Suzy Welch reveals how exploring the impact of our decisions in multiple time frames brings to the surface our unconscious agendas, fears, needs and desires- and ultimately helps us identify and live according to our deepest goals and values.
"All too often, we make decisions just to avoid an immediate ouch- the sulking child, the disappointed family, the complicated logistics, the angry coworkers and so on. 10-10-10 has a powerful way of mitigating that tendency. It helps us decide whether (or not) it's worth it to endure short-term flare-outs in service of our larger, more deeply held goals in life," Suzy says.
